E-mail Problemme

Q: Is it possible to setup avast! HOME to automatically delete infected attachments from incoming e-mail messages?

A: Yes, it´s possible, but in PROFESSIONAL edition only. This feature is not available in the HOME version.

So, if you´re using the PROFESSIONAL edition, follow these steps:

  1. Start avast! in enhanced interface.
  2. In left panel, click on TASKS.
  3. In right panel, right-click on the task RESIDENT PROTECTION and select PROPERTIES.
  4. Below check the ADVANCED CONFIGURATION checkbox.
  5. In left panel, under OUTLOOK/EXCHANGE or INTERNET MAIL provider, click on VIRUS.
  6. Click on REMOVE LAST WORD button and then click on DELETE button.
  7. Click OK to save the changes.

Q: Why can't I open or save e-mail attachments when using avast! 4 and Outlook Express 6?

A: This is a new security feature of Outlook Express 6 (not an avast! problem) where the possibility to SAVE and OPEN attachments is disabled by default.

You can enable attachments to SAVE and OPEN by doing the following:

  1. Open Outlook Express
  2. Choose TOOLS -> OPTIONS -> SECURITY
  3. Uncheck the option "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus"
  4. Click OK

Q: avast!

1. Schliessen Sie Outlook Express.
2. Starten Sie den "Mail Protection Wizard" indem Sie Start > Alle Programe > Avast Anti-virus > Mail Protection Wizard auswählen.
Hier wählen Sie "Automatically remove protection from all my accounts".
3. Starten Sie Outlook Express.
4. In Outlook Express kontrollieren Sie die Server Adressen und User-Namen. Wenn Ihnen diese Daten nicht vorliegen, wenden Sie sich bitte an Ihren Internetprovider.
5. Schliessen Sie Outlook Express (sehr wichtig!!!)
6. Starten Sie den "Mail Protection Wizard" noch einmal.
7. Wählen Sie "Set up the protection manually".
8. Wählen Sie "I don´t use MS Outlook..."
9. Folgen Sie den Anweisungen.
10. Zum Schluss starten Sie Outlook Express wieder. Die POP und SMTP Serveradressen sind geändert, jedoch wird jetzt alles funktionieren.

Q: When I start Microsoft Outlook, a message window pops up stating that "avoutext.dll cannot be loaded/started". What should I do?

A:

  1. Close MS Outlook.
  2. Delete avast32 item in
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions registry via REGEDIT.EXE
  3. Search for and delete all extend.dat files from your hard disk (the file may be hidden).

Q: When I have avast! installed, my MS Outlook keeps crashing. The "ModName" in the technical information window refers to "oleaut32.dll"

A:

The problem is caused by an incompatibility between avast! antivirus and the "MSN Desktop Search" application.

We're investigating ways to solve the issue.

Before the problem is solved, the only known workaround is to disable the MSN toolbar in Outlook.

Q: After updating to version 4.5 I can no longer send/receive emails.

A:

The following text applies to Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 systems only.

Mail scanning in avast 4.5 is implemented differently than in previous versions. In avast 4.5, mail filtering works transparently. That is, no reconfiguration of mail clients of any kind is required for the mail scanning function to work.

If you have, in the past, manually reconfigured your e-mail client program to route all traffic through the avast! Internet Mail provider (by changing the server addresses to 127.0.0.1 and the username value - as described in the avast help files), you should remove these extra settings (i.e. revert them to the original state; in other words, have the accounts set up exactly as if there was no avast installed). This will allow the avast transparent mail proxy to be used.
